Description

This book is designed for students who want to learn the Korean language and culture through a Korean soap opera, “낭랑 18세 (Sweet 18).” This is ideal for learners at the Intermediate High or Advanced Low level of Korean, according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines, to consolidate their foundation in the language and improve their language skills and cultural literacy. The book can be used in class or as self-study materials. 


The book consists of Preface, 16 chapters, and Appendix. The Preface begins with the relevant cultural and historical background of the drama. Each of sixteen chapters each covers one episode of the drama in order, by presenting pre-view activities, post-view activities, and a wrap-up quiz. The pre-view activities provide keywords and vocabulary to facilitate understanding of the content. The post-view activities are: (1) basic comprehension check-up exercises followed by a full synopsis of the episode, (2) a range of idiomatic expressions and usages with concrete examples and exercises, and (3) further reading with discussion questions. The topics for further reading are chosen from the theme of each episode, reflecting both traditional and modern aspects of Korean life and culture. Finally, the wrap-up quiz is to review the materials learned in the chapter. The Appendix helps learners to develop advanced writing skills systematically, such as narration, description, comparison, and review essays.
